One of the best parts of working on a film festival is the thrill of discovering striking films through our submissions process. Every year our small, square-eyed team screen hundreds of submitted films, and whittles down the pile until only the films that left us with the greatest impression remain.
Bradford International Film Festival is a very (very) broad church – your film can be of any genre or style – so what exactly is it that we’re looking for?
It’s a tricky question to answer. Films – no matter what kind they are – set their own rules, and should be judged on their own terms. But selections must be made according to a combination of personal taste and an awareness of how the film will relate to an audience (and how an audience will relate to the film).
We keep a couple of questions in mind:
“Has this film achieved what it’s set out to achieve?”, and “Is what it’s trying to achieve any good?”
Ultimately, it’s the gut response that counts; that voice that says early on, “this needs to be in”. If we think that, then we know that the audience will too. And then comes the pleasure of seeing a film you love connect with its audience in a public place. Film festivals do many things at once, but one of the most satisfying for us, is to be able to offer the best of the legions of films being made all over the world, the chance to connect with real people at a great event.
